Viber is free for android too - send messages for free and make free phone calls

Viber on android for free. Calls and text messages for free
Mobile VoIP is gaining a lot of attention recently. Applications such as whatsapp for iPhone and Maaii with 100 minutes of free calls everyday, have given mobile VoIP a new distinction. Viber is another application that is popular for iPhone, Viber dev team has also ported it to Android. If you remember, when we posted about Viber for iPhone, the Viber development team commented that they will have a product ready for Android soon. They kept their word and we have Viber free for Android.

Features of Viber for Android

Viber for Android lets you
  1. Make free phone calls to anyone anywhere from Android
  2. Send free text messages over Android phones to anyone in the world
  3. Crystal clear sound quality, on 3G as well as wi-fi
  4. Runs in the background
  5. Viber for android is free but there are no advertisement
How to get Viber for Android and iPhone?

Viber for Android can be downloaded from the marketplace. Similarly, Viber for iPhone can be downloaded from App Store. Here are quick links to both places.

Viber for android has a rating of 4.1 out of 69,817 votes. There are almost 40,000 people who gave them a 5 stars rating and majority of the rest chose to give them 4 stars. This is impressive as only to have so many ratings you need to have a kickass app.

Once you have downloaded Viber, it will ask for your phone number. You will receive a text message on this phone number for verification purposes. Everyone with Viber installed on their phones will see you in their list of Viber contacts if they have your phone number in their phone's contacts. If you do not want to make your primary number available or if you do not have FREE Texting than you can use a Google Voice number to receive this text. Alternatively, instead of a Text message you can receive a callback from Viber.

Viber for Blackberry

If you are a Blackberry user, we have a good news for you. The Viber dev team is working on a Blackberry version of Viber. Once Viber for Blackberry smart phones is out, we will post a review of Viber for Blackberry and compare it with Viber for iPhone and Android.

Viber for PC

Viber for iPhone and Android is doing well on both market stores. It is time for the Viber dev team to launch a Viber for PC application that can connect with anyone on their PCs or smart-phones if they are using Viber. We hope the dev team is listening to this one.

This is a member of the Viber Development Team!

Regarding Blackberry- We are currently at the last stages of coordination with RIM. You can expect the release as soon as the app is approved by them (extremely soon).

If you have any question about Viber - please feel free to ask.

  4. In the interest of clarity, your wording in the article as I am reading it at the moment is not clear. The wording implies that you can call or text anyone for free, and this is not true. You can call or text Viber users, anyone else is billed as normal for your service. I'm surprised the User ID Viber did not clarify this point.

  5. Dear Reader,

Yes, that is correct. You can only send messages and Calls to other Viber users for free. It is tacit understanding since we already mentioned it in our post. Nevertheless, your point stands correct and we will keep that in mind while writing future posts on mobile Voip.

    Regards,
    Team - Free Calls Hub

  6. how do I save overseas numbers on viber ?

    ReplyDelete
  7. @sabbir -

You need to save the number in its full international format, including the "+" sign, the country code, the area/cellular code, and lastly the subscriber number. If you run into trouble, please let me know and I'll guide you through it :)

  8. What if I call abroad have already viber same but I'm not using wifi, i use my bills regularly ..is it free?? i have a viber on my iphone...

  9. Viber itself - the app and the service - is totally free, meaning we (Viber) don't charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet to function, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi - that user is not paying anything for sure. If the user is connected to 3G, the user *may* be paying his cellular company for the data (Viber uses 0.25MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that he has with his cellular company, and needs to be verified with them.

Note that it doesn't matter if the destination user you are calling is abroad. What matters is that you are simply using 3G ineternet :)

Video calling is still not possible through Viber. It is something we plan to add to the app in the future, but we are still not sure when exactly.
