Thanks to our avid reader Mr. Gopal for notifying us about this cool trick to use Google Voice for FREE international SMS (Text messaging). Mr. Gopal, from UK, has been using Google Voice to text his girl friend in India for two months now. The good part is that she is also able to reply via a text message instantly. This is as good as texting someone local with an unlimited texting plan. If you are looking for a similar hack please read on.
- A smartphone with Google Voice App, you can also use web version at m.google.com/voice
- Google Voice Account (two accounts)
- Internet Connection on both phones (GPRS will do)
Google Voice App: Visit their web page; it will automatically detect if there is an application for your phone. If there is one download it . Otherwise, you can use the web version of Google Voice application to send and receive text messages.
Google Voice Accounts: If you are in USA, create two accounts for Google voice only to be used by you and your friend. If you are not in USA you need to use a proxy to create these accounts. Search for voxox hack on our website to learn how to do this.
Internet connection: Mr. Gopal's girl friend used Vodafone GPRS on her iPhone. He told us about a hack to use normal GPRS package, we will post it in another post soon. Let us know if you need that information.
Once you have everything mentioned above set up, you will have two phone numbers associated with those two accounts. You can now send and receive text messages to each other for free.
This hack will work between two countries anywhere in the world where you can satisfy the above requirements. Even within one country you can use it to get FREE text/SMS. We hope you find it interesting and useful. If you are looking for a home phone (landline) in USA or a way that you can use to make free phone calls to USA and Canada learn about it at FREE Home phone solution using Google Voice.
If you are in USA and want to use Google Voice without using your phone minutes you can do this using SipGate. You can read our tutorial on how to use Google Voice without spending phone minutes.
that's pretty dumb dude. you can just install something like NimBuzz and talk unlimited for free. or if you want to text just install yahoo messenger on your phone lol
ReplyDeleteDear Anony,
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Nimbuzz or any other such solution is that the GPRS connection, which still prevails in many countries, does not support voip calls. The issue with yahoo messenger is that you need to be online or even if you leave an offline it will be gone from your phone once you have checked it while GV texts will sit in your inbox for as long as you want.

I think this is a pretty dumb solution. If both phones are smartphones and need internet connection, they are better off using an IM application. Besides GV does not forward text messages to a phone. It forwards it as an email. And India numbers cannot be added in GV, if you did not know. Also, did you try this method already or are you just forwarding someone's claimed solution?
ReplyDeleteDear Anony,
ReplyDeleteIMs are definitely a way to go about this but the issue with IMs are the reliability of offline messages. Also, some of them are plagued with spams. GV messages can be forwarded as text fro FREE in US phone but it will cost a little to do the same on Indian end. However, if you have GPRS it is of no use, as messages can be read from phone regardless. The Indian numbers can not be added to GV but the provided solution exactly solves that problem, isn't that right? We have tried this method and we like it better than IMs. Thank you for your comment.

Agree, it was my oversight. GV does forward text messages. But it only does so to US numbers.
ReplyDeleteOn your comment:
"The Indian numbers can not be added to GV but the provided solution exactly solves that problem, isn't that right?"
How so? Let's say I have 2 numbers one for myself and another for someone in India, I text the (US) India number. How does this reach the India number as an SMS? Do we have to login and check in GV? Or does this get delivered as a text message? Your post is not clear. I don't think it is possible to deliver text messages through GV to an India number. Any other solution (such as logging in through web) is pointless and an IM is more reliable since logging in some web service would eventually not yield push notifications.
If I am mistaken, please let us know. Your main blog post is certainly vague and not informative.
Also, another suggestion. Whatsapp is a much better and simpler way to deal with this if the India connection has GPRS.
ReplyDeleteDear Anony,
ReplyDeleteGV application for most smart phones does has push notifications. You do not get a text message but a notification is good enough for most of our readers.
Thanks for mentioning whatsapp, we will try it out soon.

I'd go with Viber. So I text message or call any one and anywhere in the world for free. Ofcourse the other party also need to have Viber installed. If both parties are using smart phones with internet connection then this is not a problem.
ReplyDeleteDear Reader,
ReplyDeleteThat is so true. I also believe that Viber is one of the best applications out there. However, the benefit of using Google Voice is that you can use the same number with all your contacts in US too.
