Google Voice saves your phone minutes - make free phone calls to USA and Canada

Using GV through SipgateGoogle Voice is by far a neat and clean solution for making free calls to USA and Canada. It is however, not completely free since you need to use your anytime minutes to call Google Voice number. People with unlimited calling to few numbers usually add their GV number to the list of favorite destination and make free calls without using anytime minutes provided by their telecom operator. This is a good hack but not everyone has free numbers in their plan. If you remember Gizmo offers free calls from Google Voice. This was such a great application that Google acquired gizmo and now sits on it. They have stopped new registrations to Gizmo and only those who registered while it was available are able to make calls using Gizmo. We are going to introduce a similar method only using Sipgate.

Why to use Google Voice with SipGate

We experimented with some tools and ran into a way to make free calls using Google Voice without wasting your anytime minutes. All you need to do is to set up your Sip gate in order to make free phone calls anywhere in USA and Canada. Once you set up your Sipgate account you can use your computer as a cell phone. You can still receive calls on your main number using your cell phone or you can do this using your computer or laptop. This way you can save your anytime cellular minutes and probably experience a better call quality with added advantage of having the privilege to record your calls.

What all do you need to use GV with Sipgate

Google Voice Account: You need a GV account which is now open for all, that is you do not need an invitation for GV any more. You also need a Sipgate Account and phone number, both of these are free. Sipgate provides a host of services other than Sipgate One which we are going to talk about today.

Step by step tutorial to set up Sipgate with GV

  • Step 1: First thing is to get a Google Voice account if you do not have one. You can choose a number based on your preferences.
  • Step 2: Get a Sipgate account. This is similar to the process you followed to get a GV account. You need to visit sipgate One website to get started. They will send you a text message that has a confirmation code for verification purposes. You can provide your own cell phone or if text is not free you can also use the GV number to get that text.
  • Step 3: Provide the basic information like your name, address and email. Make sure you provide a working email as you will have to confirm it.
  • Step 4: Download Sipgate software but do not start installing it right away. Respond to your email first that you get after your Sipgate registration.
  • Step 5: you will eventually land at a page where you have to choose your phone number. You need to add your exact address here. Make sure you pick the number that is available for free as they have paid options too.
  • Step 6: Go to Sipgate website, sign in and click on settings in the upper right corner. You will see your phone number you provided for texting in your default phone section. You want your main phone to be here as that is where you want to take all your calls if you are not in a position to use your computer.
  • Step 7: Go to your GV account and add this new number you got from Sipgate and add it as a new phone under GV. You will have to verify it so make sure you need to install your application now. Once it is installed run it and log in. Let GV confirm this number by calling you, pick up the call from GV and enter the digits (switch to dial-pad) that GV asked you to type for confirmation.
That is all, now you are all set to use your GV account without spending your cellular minutes. This is a long tutorial and might need you to try things two-three times if you do not get it correct the first time. However, it works :). BTW, there is an easier method to use Google voice as your home phone solution using Obihai. Read how Google Voice Obihai adapter can help you have a free home phone solution with the ability to use it from anywhere using mobile application.

  1. "You can provide your own cell phone or if text is not free you can also use the GV number to get that text."

My GV number didn't work for me on that. There is a dropdown there in which you have to choose a cell phone carrier.

  2. Dear Iverson,
Thank you for pointing that out. We did not realize that you need to select the telecom operator too. We have updated the post.

  3. Sipgate only lasts for 60 minutes and if you don't use it all in one month it is terminated. Then you have to buy a plan.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Where is the updated post? If sipgate lasts only 60 mins, is there another way to do this?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Dear Hina,
It seems we did not send the message across properly. The 60 minutes limit is for outgoing calls. When you use Sipgate with Google Voice you do not make outgoing calls. Google Voice calls you in on your SipGate number therefore there is essentially no limit.
If you want to try something out please try WhistlePhone. Thank you.

  6. I am noticing with this setup, even when calls are initiated from the GV website. When I select my sipgate number as the phone to call with, it goes through the process. During this process, I receive a call, I pick up, and I am connected to the person I am calling. I notice after talking for a few minutes, when I go to the sipgate web site, my minute count goes down. It appears they are no longer offering free incoming calls. Any Ideas how to get around this? It looks like once the 60 minutes run out, I will be charged.

  7. Dear Anony,
The incoming calls have always been free with Sipgate. We never heard of them stopping this service. Were you able to make free calls earlier but not any more? If that is not the case please make sure that you are making calls from your GV that connects you to the SipGate account. If you still have that issue please let us know and we will try to find out what is wrong there. Thank you.

  8. Yeah, it doesn't look like incoming calls are still free with Sipgate.

  9. Be sure you set up a sipgate one account as my minutes do not go down when I initiate calls via Google Voice:

  10. Dear Anony,

Thank you for your feedback. You correctly mentioned sipgate ONE as that is the service where you get free incoming calls.

Here is an excerpt from their website:
" Sign up now and get the only phone number you will ever need for free. Your sipgate phone number can be called from any phone in the world and unlike other VoIP or cell providers we don't charge you for calls received."

AT&T has nothing to do with you using GV for messaging. Please feel free to use it. They will never charge you for it.

  15. Rohit, Sip is a protocol, sipgate is a company
which offers voip services. Most common protocol used by VOIP services is SIP.

Not sure why u were not able to make this out,
when i search google for SIP, all the top hits
    exaplin what SIP is.

Anonymous from Oct 30, yes if you can live without your cell phone, once the setup is done

  17. I plan on using Sipgate and GV Mobile+ with my AT&T iPhone. I have only 400 minutes/month, so I'm eager to do all my calls with this combo.

I'm confused, though, by "Step 6" above: "You want your main phone here as that is where you want to take all your calls if you are not in a position to use your computer."

What does "main phone" mean? Should I use my AT&T cell phone number there? Won't that defeat the purpose of using Sipgate (because it will eat into my Anytime minutes)?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi,

The step 6 means that if you are not able to take a call on your computer you can still take it on your phone. You do not want to miss a call in order to save a few minutes. In short, this is your back up plan. Yes, the main phone is your AT&T phone. We are going to post about a new method to save minutes, so please check back soon.

    thank you for your e-mail.

Incoming calls are free of charge to receive, assuming you are not forwarding them
    to another phone number.

  20. So.. to be clear (because I too am looking to not use anytime minutes.) If I use sipgate with an iphone 4 or android phone does it require me having to have a voice plan to call me (the calls come in to be placed back out) or are the calls coming in using data only?

  21. Okay - I have my GV set up and my sipgate set up. I've got my sipgate number added into
    gv as my phone.
made a call from GV iphone4 app and it still used my carrier minutes.
The only thing I did different was sign up for a sipgate team 3 account on accident (then couldn't change it). But the team account is free for 30 days.

I'm not understanding something - when I place a call in GV, does it route through Sipgate to the phone number and register in Sipgate as an incoming call?
    thanks,
    Mike

  22. Dear All,

This works for your PC. When you make a phone call from your iPhone or any other phone it does use your phone minutes. If you want to make calls from your phone without using your phone minutes you should read our article on how to convert your iPod into iPhone

  23. I think I am a bit confused here. I have a sip number from sipgate and have been able to activate GV (which is great!). But I can't see how I can make "outgoing" calls for free. If I use my sip number, don't I still have to pay for outgoing minutes with sipgate. If I use GV it seems to dial a USA number to access GV. Am I missing a step here?
    Thanks,
    Ryan
P.S. I am trying this setup from Hong Kong, so it would be great to be able to make USA calls for free while I live overseas.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hey Ryan,
When you dial using Google voice it calls you first and then your party. If you put your sipgate number as your number GV will call you on your sipgate number. You should have gotten a sipgate number which is a USA phone number. Hope this helps.

  25. Hi,
I am eager to try out sipgate with GV to save my cell phone minutes. However the SMS message never came after I filled in the information on the sign up page. Is there a problem with the sign up process? I sent a test text message from GV to my cell phone and it worked.
    Thanks

  31. Dear Anony,
If you meant that you need to confirm you GV number in order to use this hack please use Whistle Phone to do that if you do not have any other number. Search for Whistle phone on our blog and you should be able to set it up in no time.

  32. hello, like the other user, am currently going overseas for quite a while. is it possible to kill my att wireless number, use google voice with SIP, to place calls? How would it work for people who want to call me. I have not set up anything yet. I do use fring and its pretty nice, but would like some more flexibility. Dont really understand how this set up would benefit. Do I need to port the att wireless number to Google Voice?

  33. Dear Fred,
If all you need is an ability to make and receive calls you can use whistlephone. We have reviewed it at this post. You will get a number that you can use for incoming as well as outgoing calls.
Additionally, our team is currently testing a new method to use Google Voice through SIP clients. As soon as we hack that, we will let you guys know about it.

  34. An Android mobile phone app has just come out that lets you make unlimited free calls within US and Canada without complicated setup. You just need a free Google Voice number.(Google Voice has very low rates for international calls too.) The app works over Wi-Fi and 3G/4G networks without using your mobile minutes. Check it out at: http://www.appbrain.com/app/groove-ip/com.gvoip

  37. This is all pretty pointless since I can't send or Receive any calls on Sipgate with a zero balance. I would have to pay them something and the minimum is $20 so it's not cheap. Also, why setup GV? I don't see the point in that since the Sipgate number can just be called directly.
I can't setup and confirm the number with GV without credit on Sipgate anyway so if I pay them to get credit there's no need for GV!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dear Anony,

You do not need to pay in order to receive free calls. Since GV will call you for free you should be able to use sipgate+GV combo without issues. This is true that you need to verify your GV number but you can use any of the phones in USA for that. You can also use a phone number from Whistlephone that is again free. That should solve your problems. Please let me know if you still have issues.

  39. I still don't see any reason to use GV since I can make calls directly with SG and I'm still using minutes if I'm calling GV or calling the number directly so what's the point of adding extra complexity?

  40. Dear Anony,

Sipgate only allows free calls among sipgate users http://www.sipgate.com/rates. If you are able to make domestic calls or calls to canada for free we wonder how do you do that. If you have a trick we would like to hear about it.

  41. You are not going to all this trouble just to save 10 cents are you? If I understand this correctly you are using GV as a middleman, you call there first and it makes the call to the destination then calls you back to complete the call for free? I don't know how you guys come up with these crazy schemes or why you bother to blog about it but it's not going to work. You still have to call GV to start with so you aren't saving anything.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dear Anony,

The idea is to have GV call you and thus you make free calls. Yes you are right that it is not that big a saving if you are making a domestic call and that too not very often. However, people could use this combo anywhere in the world to make free calls to USA and Canada. That is why this post has been one of our popular posts week after week invariably. We thank you for stimulating the discussion here.
