Viber offers free international text messaging and support for Android

Not so long ago we talked about an iPhone application that lets you make free phone calls anywhere in the world. We had a good response from our readers on that post - Free international calls from Viber, therefore we believe you would like this update from Viber team. Viber is now (read: will be soon) available for android phone too and you are now able to send free text messages anywhere in the world. Not to mention the free international call feature is still there.


Viber Vs WhistlePhone Vs HeyWire

Since there is a plethora of mobile voip applications that let you make cheap or even free international phone calls and let you send free international text messages it is important to know your options before you hog up your phone with everything. Let us compare these applications based on the features they provide:

Free Phone Calls:
Viber is a pure mVoip application that lets you connect to your friends anywhere in the world who have Viber downloaded on their smartphones. For instance, you can call your friends in India or Pakistan if they have downloaded Viber on their iPhones or Android phones provided they have a good data plan or internet service on their phones. Viber for PC lets you use Viber on your laptops and computers too.

WhistlePhone provides you with totally free internet to phone calls to anyone in USA. You can be in any part of the world and with a decent internet connection you can make calls to any cellphone or landline phone in USA. However, they have recently announced some restrictions on the free calls policy. Please read our post on Whistle phone going Ringplus' way and capping amount of free minutes per call.

Heywire does not offer free calls at all. It is a great application for texting though.

Free Text Messages:
Viber has introduced free texting with its newer version for iPhone. Also, you can use it with your Android phone too. Similar to free international phone calls, text messages can also be sent anywhere in the world. Viber application supports push notifications. That is you will automatically get an alert as you get a new message. Text messages can only be sent to other Viber users.

Whistlephone does not have text messaging yet. Given the state of Voip we believe Whistle phone will soon come up with Free texting. Whistlephone will be a great application if they added texting to their application.

Heywire is a revolutionary texting application. It lets you send free international text messages to any cell phone in the world. We have blogged about Heywire and its usage details in an earlier post. Heywire has annoying ads but I guess you won't mind a free sub for lunch if the wrapper has some print on it, right?

How to get Viber

Viber for iPhone can be downloaded from App store directly from your iPhone. Alternatively, you can download it from the app store and then install it on your iPhone.

    I tried viber 1 months ago and never managed to talk to a viber contact. The phone rang. It was answered and then we could not hear eAch other.
    Does anyone have the same problems?
    Does anyone have positive feedback for viber?

    Can you give us more info about how did you use Viber? Was it over wi-fi over 3G or other network? We have tried Viber and we found it pretty good over wi-fi.

    Hi I just tried calling my friend who has viber as well an I could not hear her bit she could hear me?? Anyone else had the same problem??

    Is your friend on wi-fi, 3G, or GPRS? I our experience Viber has been very good on both 3G and Wi-Fi but not as good at GPRS.

    If I want to send a text to Pakistan mobile, does that person have to have the app viber on their blackberry? What about calls? Can I call their mobile phones without them having to download the app? Im in U.S have an android phone and an itouch 3rd gen.

      Dear Anon,

      I am afraid Viber for Blackberry does not have calling facility. Even for texting they need to download the app on their smartphone - it need not be Blackberry though. It can be iPhone, Android, or Windows OS based phone such as Nokia Lumia.
