Skype has been constantly innovating to stay on top of competition. With the proliferation of Google Voice to Gmail inbox, its usage to make free phone calls to USA and Canada has gone up radically. Skype has been there for very long and to continue to be there when it has to compete with such giants it is inevitable for Skype to bring in some genuine innovations to change the way people make phone calls. For instance Google Voice offers Free Phone Calls while Skype charges $3 per month for the same service. However, Skype has an edge over google because it is mostly used by people to make FREE video calls (now upto 10 people) and most of Skype users still perceive it as the best way to make video calls.
Group Video Calling
Many of Skype users have complained about the limit of having only two people during an active video calls. Although, you could do a voice conference with a larger group but Video was only between two parties. Now, Skype has launched second Beta version of Skype 5.10 where you can make Video calls among a group of 10. That is you can have at the max 10 Video feeds on your screen at a time. You might also notice a little improvement in reliability and video and audio quality.
The good and the bad of Group Video Calls
The good things are many such as a fresh new appealing user interface, better call quality while you are conversing with multiple people and last but not the least bug fixing to add reliability to the older version. On the bad side, this beta version is only available for Windows operating system. Linux users as well as Mac OS X users are still out of luck to try their hands on this new feature. You can download it to play and test this version.
Update: It is no more free
Finally, Skype has tested the group video calling feature thoroughly and made it a premium feature. You will not be able to make free video calls to your friends any more. You can read more about this Skype's group video calling feature going premium in a post we posted recently.

Dear Rohit,
ReplyDeleteWe are yet to come across an application that lets you make video calls from iphone 4 to a PC. Frings lets you make calls between two phones but for calls between iPhone4 and PC you will have to wait a little longer untill Skype or some other application introduces Video Calling.
