Google has continued its practice of creating scarcity and then letting everyone enjoy its offerings so that they feel lucky. They did the same with Gmail if you remember. Gmail was initially invite only email system. Everyone felt lucky when they got their gmail account. After some time, when they tested their system for long enough they allowed everyone to jump on the gmail train. They followed this similar strategy with their service known as Google Voice. They launched it by invitation only, then they allowed it for military and then for students. Now they let it open for everyone.
What is Google Voice
If you are unaware of Google Voice, it is a service by Google that lets you bind all your phone numbers to one Google phone number. For example you might give out your Google Voice number to all your contacts and when they call you it will ring the number(s) that you set up in Google Voice. This will even work when you go out of US. You can tie your international number with your account and Google Voice will connect your international number when someone calls your local USA number. Google Voice is free for calls to USA and Canada (registration is only available for people in USA), thus if you are in one of these countries you do not pay a single dime for this service. If you go to some other country in that case you need to buy credit from Google so that it can transfer your calls to your local number in that country. Google acquired Grand Central and converted it to what we see as Google Voice today.
Why do you need Google Voice
We will now explain why you, a Free Calls Hub reader, need google Voice. The obvious reason is that if you have multiple phone numbers you can register for free services for multiple times, thereby getting multiple minutes. You can make all your Google Voice numbers ring your same home phone or cell number and avail all offers multiple times.
You can also use Google voice to SHOW OFF. How about a number like PlayBoy143. Pardon us but that is just an example, right? You can search for cool numbers like that while selecting your number. Google lets you search for a number based on your search keywords.
Finally, you need google voice if you are a businessman and travel a lot to international destinations as explained in "What is Google Voice".
How to get it
To get a new number all you need to do is to visit Google Voice Website and register for an account. Once you register for an account you can choose a number for yourself. Please note that you might want to get a local number so that your contacts can call you without paying for long distance. Once you get your number you can register and verify your own numbers. When someone calls you on your Google Voice number your registered numbers will ring. There are few more settings that you can play with.

Thanks for visiting Google Voice. We're not yet open for users outside the US, but are planning to expand our service to additional countries in the future.
By the way, registration doesn't work from Canada, the page is displaying the following:

Dear Bobby,
ReplyDeleteSorry for the confusion that we created. You are right that GV is only available to people in USA. However, people from USA can make calls to Canada for free. Having said that, if you manage to get an account for GV you can use this account from anywhere in world where you have internet connectivity using Sipgate. BTW, even Sipgate is not available similar to GV.
We have updated the blog to prevent further confusion. Thank you for your valuable comment.
